Five foot three, blond, blue eyes, and seventeen …Miss Laura A. Martin who aspires to be Kauai Junior Miss of 1969.
Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, Miss Martin is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Richard J. Martin of Lihue. The Kauai High School senior wishes to attend the University of Hawaii and major in English, her favorite subject.
Journalism holds her interest and second to this, Laura likes French. She hopes to teach on the secondary level.
Her interests and hobbies are diversified including tennis, golf, archery and swimming. Her hobbies include photography, gardening, sewing, cooking, reading and boating.
Miss Martin attends St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and is particularly interested in a Bible Study course she is taking.
Her talents are in singing, acting, art-photography and abstract design. In her freshman year, Miss Martin was on the school debate team; in her sophomore year she was on the track team and was a member of the A Capella Choir. Miss Martin works part time for Holiday Resorts as a telephone operator.
This year she is in the Drama Club and she is photo editor for the school annual. “I hope to study abroad for I love to travel,’ says the enthusiastic miss. “When I am not teaching I will have time to travel. I will have a degree in photo journalism which will enable me to travel a great deal. I will also be able to use French in my travelling. During this time I would like to take a course in Nautical Science or sailing in order to gain more knowledge of boats, my favorite means of travel,” says Miss Martin.
Claire Susan Remoaldo, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Remoaldo of Kalaheo. is another in the 1969 Kauai Junior Miss contest.
Claire will be 17 December 20. She is five feet, five and a half inches tall, has medium brown hair and green eyes. She is very active in school activities and Spanish is her favorite subject.
Extracurricular activities include membership in the Pep Club, PA AC. FIA, FHA, the Spanish Club secretary-vice president, publicity chairman, the KSLI, and participated in the conference on Adult Youth communication and Sex Education. Miss Remoaldo is on the school honor roll and is a reporter for the Ka welo O kala and member of the school track team.
Miss Remoaldo plans to attend Chaminade College in Honolulu. She would like to major in Marketing Science reasoning the business world offers new and interesting challenges.
Her hobbies are swimming, hiking, collecting shells, collecting stamps, bottles, painting and drawing.
The young miss is a member of the Sodality and is the church organist.
She plays the organ and the piano. “I enjoy singing and dancing though no one really appreciates my efforts except myself” she admits. She enjoys also telling a story or pantomiming and utilizing the many things taught her in speech class at Kauai High School.
Petite Lori von Stroheim gives strength to the saying, dynamite comes in small packages. The active seventeen year old daughter of Mrs. Phyllis von Stroheim is a horsewoman of the first order and is State barrel racing champion.
Five feet, two inches high, Miss von Stroheim has brown eyes, and brown hair. Her extracurricular activities and club memberships are numerous and explain why this young lady is always on the go.
She is on the Better English Committee, and is a member of the Tri K Club, the Thespian Society, the French Club and the 4-H Comancheros Club.
Miss von Stroheim is vice president of the Teens Against Cancer League, she is a Volunteer at Wilcox Hospital, a delegate to the Y-Teen State conference, president of the Lokahi Y-Teen Club, a Western Riding instructor, delegate for two years to the 4-H Ahaolelo at University of Hawaii, three years Junior Leader for the 4-H Comancheros Club and four years 4-H Horsemanship State finalist. Her favorite subject in school is chemistry.
What does a young lady plan for the future whose talents are horsemanship and dancing? “I plan to attend California Polytechnic at Pomona and take animal husbandry to learn more about animal nutrition, animal breeding, training and showing horses with the hope of operating a breeding ranch some day, she explains.
Energetic Lori loves to water ski, work on the trampoline, do gymnastics and enjoys photography. She likes swimming, jogging, dancing, horseback riding and she sews a lot. Miss von Stroheim is a member of All Saint’s Church in Kapaa. Lori was born in Los Angeles, California and resides in Wailua Houselots.
