PO’IPU — Some $30,000 has been pledged for a 15-minute aerial fireworks
spectacular Friday, Dec. 31, at 6:45 p.m., to coincide with the dropping of the
millennium ball in New York City’s Time Square.
The display will be best
viewed from Po’ipu Beach Park, and by those partying at the nearby Sheraton
Kaua’i Resort further down the beach.
The Po’ipu Beach Resort Association
and Sheraton Kaua’i have been rounding up donations for the fireworks display,
according to Margy Parker, PBRA executive director.
Funds have come from
the Hyatt Regency Kaua’i Resort & Spa, Kiahuna Plantation homeowners
association, Lawa’i Beach Resort, Suite Paradise, Kaua’i Visitors Bureau,
Embassy Vacation Resort Po’ipu, Grantham Resorts, Brennecke’s Beach Broiler,
County of Kaua’i, Po’ipu Kapili, Castle Resorts, Sunset Kahili, Keoki’s
Paradise, Joe’s on the Green, Po’ipu Connection, Po’ipu Plantation, and Lani
Taylor.
That same day, the Sheraton Kaua’i Resort plans 14 hours of
entertainment, beginning at noon with “The Last Great Beach Party of this
Millennium.”
Along the beach fronting the resort, things kick off with
Leina’ala Pavao’s Halau Ka Lei Mokihana ‘O Leina’ala, followed by the Sidekicks
at 1 p.m., The Honolulu Band at 2 p.m., Salsa Hawai’i at 3 p.m., Kainoa ‘Ohana
at 4 p.m., Pacific Sound Machine at 5 p.m., and Tropical Breeze at 6
p.m.
Food will also be available during the beach party.
The Point, a
bar and restaurant at the hotel, opens for cocktail service at 11 a.m., and
offers appetizers, light lunches and dinner items until 10 p.m. The Point has
live entertainment, with the duo Kauilani performing from 9:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.,
and Bruce Harris and his trio from 11 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. A $20 cover charge will
be collected until 1 a.m.
The hotel’s Millennium Extravaganza includes
special dinner menus at Shells and Naniwa restaurants, with dinner seating at
5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Those seated at 5:30 p.m. will have views of the
fireworks.
At 9 p.m., the Po’ipu Ballroom opens for dancing, until the 10
p.m. show time when magician Kaulana takes the stage. Danny Couch, “The Golden
Voice of Hawai’i,” headlines a two-hour musical revue, backed by The
Celebration Band and Starsational singers and dancers, taking revelers through
to the new millennium.
The dinner extravaganza, which includes dinner and
show, requires prepaid reservations. The cost for dinner and show is $180 per
person, all-inclusive, and $90 for children. The charge for dinner only is $70
per person, and show only is $130, all-inclusive.
