KAUMAKANI — There were a few firsts in Saturday’s Kaua’i Interscholastic
Federation softball doubleheader.
The doubleheader marked the first KIF
softball games ever held at the Kaumakani Neighborhood Center field.
The
Kaua’i High Red Raiders also won their first game of the season — a 7-6
squeaker in Saturday’s second game.
Waimea won the opener 9-5.
After
the split, the host Menehunes are 2-1 in the KIF’s second round and 7-1
overall.
Kaua’i High is 1-1 in the second round and 1-7 overall.
Waimea
9, Kaua’i 5
It was a back-and-forth affair until the Menehunes erupted for
five runs in the fifth frame.
Kaua’i took a 1-0 lead in the first when Liza
Gebauer singled, stole second and scored on an error.
The Menehunes earned
a 3-1 lead in the second on RBI hits by Bridget Louis, Breanne Baptista and
Angel Kaohelaulii.
Kaua’i took a 5-3 edge with one run in the third and
three more in the fourth.
In the third, Rochelle Perreira drilled a basehit
and came around to score on an error.
In the fourth, Alisa Racelo cracked
an RBI hit, while Chantel Villatora drove in a run by getting hit by a pitch
and Shannon Perreira picked up an RBI with a bases loaded walk.
Kaohelaulii
and Erin Castillo socked RBI hits in the Menehunes’ big five-run fifth.
Jennifer Fukino, Shanelle DePeralta, Ashley Pimental and Baptista also pulled
through with hits in the rally.
The Menehunes closed the scoring in the
sixth when Castillo singled and later scored on an error.
Albette Nawai, in
relief of Louis, was the winning pitcher.
Kaua’i 7, Waimea 6
Two
Menehune errors led to three Kaua’i runs in the second inning.
Waimea
fought back to tie 3-3 in the bottom of the second. Two of the runs scored on
an error and another sprinted home on Robyn Hoopii-Manuel’s RBI hit.
The
Raiders made it 4-3 in the fourth, scoring on another WHS error. The lead
increased to 6-3 in the fifth. Rochelle Perreira’s double and Alisa Racelo’s
single were the key hits in the two-run rally, while Shannon Perreira and
Tyrene Kaluahine both walked in runs.
Louis’s RBI triple keyed a two-run
WHS rally to make it 6-5 in the fifth.
Rochelle Perreira’s RBI hit — the
eventual game-winner — made it 7-5 in the sixth.
WHS threatened, but only
mustered one run on Fukino’s hit in the final inning.
