Wesley “Wally” WallaceWesley David “Wally” Wallace of Poipu, died at his
home on Easter Sunday, April 23, 2000, at the age of 63 after a three month
battle with cancer. He was born in Seattle, Washington on December 26, 1936.
An entrepreneur at an early age, Wallace had created and expanded well
known businesses in Seattle and Alaska before moving to Kaua’i. He and his
wife, Roberta owned and operated Gaylord’s Restaurant at Kilohana since 1986
and recently developed a partnership with family members Russ and Paige Talvi
who will continue to operate the restaurant.
He graduated from Roosevelt
High School in Seattle in 1955 and after many years in the moving and storage
business in the Seattle area, moved to Alaska in 1971. There, he and his
partner, John Stirrat built a very successful manufactured housing business in
Juneau and Fairbanks. He and his wife of 40 years made Kaua’i their home since
1985.
Wallace is survived by his wife, Roberta Tegen Wallace; a brother,
William Bruce Wallace, his wife, Cheryl and their son, Chris of Edmonds,
Washington; two daughters, Paige Wallace Talvi, her husband Russ and their
three children, Bjorn, Erik and Katy of Lihue; and Kim Nugent Whittle of
Seattle, Washington and her husband Mike and their children Katie & Devin;
two sons: Richard Wesley Wallace and his wife Kathy of Fairbanks, Alaska and
Richard’s daughter, Sierra McEvoy of Lawai; and Michael Shawn Wallace of Lawai;
his mother-in-law, Lottie M. Tegen of Olympia, Washington; two sisters-in-law,
Phyllis Richardson and her husband, Phil of Eatonville, Washington and Ann Dent
and her husband, Wes of Blackfoot, Idaho; a brother-in-law, Charles M. Tegen of
Westport, Washington and many relatives in the Pacific Northwest. He is
pre-deceased by his parents, Mary and Richard Wallace and a son, Steve Nugent,
all of Seattle.
Memorial services will be held at PuaKea Golf Course in
Lihue, Kauai on Saturday, May 6 at 6:30 p.m. Aloha attire is suggested. The
family suggests that donations may be made in Wally’s name to Kaua’i Hospice at
PO Box 3286. Lihue, HI , 96766; or to “The Wally Wallace Junior Golf Fund” at
4330 Kukui Grove Street, Lihue, HI, 96766. An avid golfer, Wally always
supported the golf programs for youth on Kaua’i; funds donated to the “WW
Junior Golf Fund” will be used to buy clubs and pay for green fees so Kauai’s
children can learn the sport that Wally loved.
