WAIMEA—Volleyball players weren’t the only beneficiaries during the Ho`oikaika
Volleyball Club’s recent trip to California, where they participated in the
Volleyall Festival.
Parents who accompanied the players could attend
workshops on the subject of “How Parents can Relax and Enjoy their Kids in
Sports,” by David Epperson, Ph.D., the co-founder of the Volleyball
Festival.
“How Parents can Strengthen their Relationships with their Kids
in Sports,” by Martin Miller, Ph. D., and “How Parents Can Develop Effective
Relationships with Coaches,” by George Selleck, Ph. D. were other topics
available to players’ parents and fans.
While players engaged in “fun”
games, Epperson presented the festival philosophy of:
* “Fun: The festival
is fun when everyone throws themselves into what they are doing, and shares
their joy with fellow participants, whether they are playing, coaching,
refereeing, wrapping ankles, administering matches or simply witnessing one of
the 7,000-plus matches.”
* “Fair: Everyone is treated equally—with dignity
and respect.”
* “Festive: An atmosphere of celebration prevails. Recognize
good fellowship, team spirit, exceptional effort and exemplary sportsmanship,
not only team victories.”
* “Friendly: The festival is friendly when
athletes, coaches, parents, spectators and staff meet on a common ground with a
passion for witnessing competent, spirited, well-rounded athletes testing their
limits in competition.”
* “Family-focused: Family members are
welcomed.”
With these words, the Ho`oikaika 12’s team won two of its three
games on opening day, including victories over Seal Beach, Calif.
Day two
action ended with a win against San Diego 25-16, 25-18.
The 12’s team was
put to the test on its final day of competition with a 6 a.m. wakeup call
following an 11 p.m. contest the night before, but went on to defeat Excel
before falling to Delta Valley and Santa Monica.
A match against top-seeded
Excel for the divisional championship was lost in three, 25-18, 12-25,
12-15.
Three of the teams Ho`oikaika 12s lost to ended up placing in the
top 10 of that age group.
The Po`okela 16s also participated in the
festival, finishing in 70th place in its age group.
Po`okela had a 3-1
showing the first day followed by a 2-2 performance on day two, 3-1 on day
three, 2-1 on the fourth day and 0-2 on the final day.
