Frances AkanaFrances Chang Akana of Kalihiwai, Kaua’i died on July 25,
2000, at the age of 86.
Born and raised in Waimea, she was educated at the
Kamehameha Schools (Class of 1932) and the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. She
began her professional career at the age of 17 when she opened “Frankie’s Dress
Shop,” the first dress shop on Kaua’i. She educated many of Kaua]i’s youth,
serving as principal of both Ko’olau and Anahola schools. She moved to
Kalihiwai in1939, when she married William “Boy” Akana and continued her work
as a teacher at both Hanalei and Kilauea elementary schools.
Serving the
community in many different ways, she was the assistant manager and controller
of Hanalei Plantation as well as an active member of Christ Memorial Church in
Kilauea where she served as treasurer and a member of the Vestry. She traveled
widely, including the Anglican Indigenous People’s Convention in 1997 in
Auckland, New Zealand.
Frances Akana is survived by daughter Linda A.
(David) Sproat, son John F. Akana, grandchildren Stacy M. Sproat, D. Kapua’ala
Sproat and Nanea N. Sproat, and brothers Alvin and Kenneth Chang. A memorial
service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, at Christ Memorial Church
in Kilauea. Aloha attire is suggested.
Melvin Gallagher
Melvin L.
Gallagher died in Two Rivers, Wisc., on May 5, 2000, at the age of 91.
Mr.
Gallagher served as Minister of Music for the Kaua’i United Churches of Christ
for more than 10 years during the 1960s and 70s. A teacher of piano, organ and
voice, he was the founder of the Kaua’i Chorale, which he led in concerts
islandwide. Besides the annual Christmas concerts, he will be remembered for
his productions of a number of master works, notably Handel’s Messiah and
Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors.
Mr. Gallagher is survived by his
wife, Georgi, two sons, Brent and David, one daughter, Stella and several
grandchildren.
Susumi Daida
Susumi “Sus” Daida, of Pua Loke, Kaua’i,
died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on July 24, 2000, at the age of 86.
Born
in Aipo Valley, Kukuiula, Kauai on March 4, 1914, he was a retired Truck Driver
with Kauai Electric Co.
He is survived by: his wife: Natsuko Daida of Pua
Loke, Kauai; two sons: Melvin (Janet) Daida of Glendale, Calif., and Clifford
(Linda) Daida of Pearl City, O’ahu; daughter: Doris (Grant) Kikuda of Rowland
Hts., Calif., four grandchildren; four brothers: Sadamu (Gladys) Daida of
Lawai, Kauai, Masami (Margaret) Daida of Santa Rosa, Calif., Sueto Daida of
Lawai, Kauai, and Masao (Adeline) Daida of Kahului, Maui; sister: Machie
Fukushima of Kapaa, Kauai; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends
may visit with the family at 4 p.m. on Friday, July 28, at the Garden Island
Mortuary Chapel; funeral service officiated by Rev. Yukiko Motoyoshi will begin
at 5 p.m. Casual attire is suggested and that flowers be omitted.
