Born in Rockford, Ill., he came to Kaua’i in
May 1999 from Santa Cruz, Calif., where he combined his passions for music and
the sea in hundreds of original songs, which he sang to the accompaniment of
his own guitar. He played rhythm guitar for Hot Tuna, a spinoff from the
Jefferson Airplane, and toured with the band of Carlos Santana. He sailed
throughout the world as captain of private and commercial vessels, including
his own fishing boats.
On Kaua’i, he and his companion transformed an older
house in Anahola into a successful bed-and-breakfast establishment known as
Hale Pau Hana.
He is survived by his son, Jamie Ziegler of Santa Cruz,
Calif., and his longtime companion, Valerie Woods of Anahola.
