ANINI—Despite the threat of Tropical Storm Daniel looming offshore, a large
crowd watched ECC Las Vegas trounce Bali Hai Realty 9-3 last Sunday at the
Anini Polo Fields.
ECC’s Kim Kelly dominated the opening chukker after
Melinda Nest opened the contest, bowling in the ball from the sideline with
Kelly taking the ball, but missing on a shot-on-goal.
Julian Chapa
capitalized on the play to score for Bali Hai from 20 yards out, but Kelly then
took control for the length of the field for a quick score.
On play
resumption, Kelly intercepted a Bali Hai pass and charged to the goalmouth for
another quick goal to end the chukker with ECC in the lead 2-1.
Kelly took
charge of the second chukker on a pass to teammate Michelle Lindstedt who took
the shot on goal that was deflected with Kelly being able to reach the ball and
score on the play for her third goal of the game.
The chukker would not end
until Kelly scored her fourth goal with a neck shot, one of the more difficult
maneuvers in polo. That score ended the chukker 4-1 for ECC.
Kelly
continued to dominate the play, opening the third chukker with her fifth goal.
Bob Nooney answered for Bali Hai, but Kelly came right back with a string of
three more goals to close the chukker 8-2 for ECC.
Bali Hai took the
offense in the final chukker with a shot on goal that was blocked by Lindstedt
only to have Ka`aina DeCoite regaining control and scoring on the play for Bali
Hai.
The response was another Kelly goal who got an assist from John Elwin
for her triple hat trick.
Bali Hai tried to close the gap with Chapa taking
a fall in the melee. Shaking off the tumble, Chapa recovered, but time ran
out before Bali Hai could do anything with another Kelly shot-on-goal attempt
that was wide.
Polo continues on Sunday at the Anini Field with a single
match starting at 3 p.m. The public is welcome with admission being $5 per
person for the afternoon.
