Dear Sen. Akaka:We are shocked that the federal hearings on the neighbor
islands have been canceled. Why can’t you watch the hearings on ‘Olelo or cable
TV? We say this with aloha, senator, as we know how painful the operation you
had is and also that you will need weeks of recuperation. (My sister-in-law
went through the same.)
Many Hawaiians are saying this is a plot to keep
them from speaking. How many can afford the round-trip airfare of $110 plus
hotel rooms overnight, etc?
Was this decision made because 90 percent of
the testimony received is against the bill? Moving the hearings to O’ahu will
only antagonize the Hawaiians further.
Frankly, we are so disappointed that
we hope ka po’e boycott the hearings. Once again, Hawaiians are being denied
access and the ability to speak freely on one of the most critical bills to
face the Hawaiian community, S 2809 / HR 4904, the recognition bill.
We
wish you a speedy recovery.
