ANINI – Three polo matches highlighted the weekend at the Anini Polo Field as
winners of the Shannon Shea Smith Memorial and the Third Annual JJ’s Cup
emerging on Sunday afternoon.
JJ’s Broiler took a 4-2 win over Sport
Fishing Kaua`i to take the Smith Cup, with Smith Chiropractic bettering Circle
Z 8-7, 8-7 to take home the JJ’s Cup.
Ka`aina DeCoite opened up the
scorebooks on the Friday contest by capitalizing on a defensive play with a
score for Smith’s.
Mike Zapara provided key defensive playing in the second
chukker, with Ronnie Tongg reaping the fruits on a goal only to have Ka`aina
DeCoite demonstrate his abilities with another Smith score that was highlighted
with some fancy stick work.
Kim Kelly answered for Circle Z by picking up a
Tongg shot for a score only to have Smith answer back on a play by Kimo
Huddleston who controlled the bowl in for the long drive downfield and the
score.
Herman Louis DeCoite heralded the start of the third chukker by
taking a pass from Ka`aina DeCoite and scoring on the run.
A three-way play
from Huddleston to Ka`aina DeCoite, to Greg Smith yielded another score with
Herman Louis DeCoite closing the chukker on another score from a mid-field
penalty shot for Smith.
Circle Z came back in the fourth chukker to tie the
contest 7-7 with Huddleston providing the go-ahead on a 60-yard penalty shot
against a defended goal.
Derrick Naauao opened the first chukker in the
Sunday finals with a circle Z goal only to have Smith Chiropractic answer on a
Huddleston score that came off an assist from Herman Louis DeCoite.
A
striking team play from Herman Louis to Huddleston set up a Ka`aina DeCoite
score on a back shot.
Tongg opened the second chukker with an early score
only to have Huddleston answer back with a penalty shot that zipped past the
goal posts with so much speed it forced the goal judge to hop out of the
way.
Herman Louis DeCoite also scored for Smith in the
chukker.
Huddleston opened the third chukker scoring by accelerating
through the pack for the goal.
Greg Smith scored on a penalty shotadding
another Smith Chiropractic notch.
Naauao opened the final chukker with a
goal that brought Circle Z to another 7-7 deadlock with Herman Louis DeCoite
breaking the stalemate on an acute angle score.
Rachel DeCamp got Sport
Fishing into the scorebooks of the JJ’s Cup matchup only to have Celia Goodman
countering on a pass from Hal Hargrave in a three-chukker match for the JJ’s
Cup.
Julian Chapa came back on a Sport Fishing goal, but Michelle
Lindstedt answered for JJ’s by taking a pass from Hargrave who controlled the
ball following a penalty shot.
Hargrave moved JJ’s further into the lead in
the second chukker.
Jana Mailow reaped the final score of the matchup by
taking a Hargrave set up shot just before the final bell.
Mary Jasper and
daughter Carol presented the winning team with trophies of the Third Annual
JJ’s Cup.
Polo continues at the Anini Field on Sunday with the club match
starting at 1:30 p.m. and the high goal matchup starting at 3:00 p.m.
The
Fifth Annual Classic Car and Motorcycle Show will be an added feature for this
week’s matches.
The public is welcome with admission being charged at $5
per person.
