It’s always timely advice that there are non-humans in the world who see people as a meal. So it was when experts this week reminded Kauaians that they shouldn’t necessarily relax just because there hasn’t been a recorded shark attack here in almost three years.
An incident in which a Frenchman who was bitten but survived while boardsailing off Maui Aug. 15 spurred a check that found seven shark attacks have occurred in Kaua’i waters in the past 10 years.
Less than one a year doesn’t seem like much, unless you’ve been or become one of the statistics. And that’ s the point of safety reminders, such as staying out of the water at dawn and dusk when sharks move close to shore in search of food, and swimming in groups that discourage sharks from attacking.
Visitors and islanders alike can keep sharks at bay by using some common sense.
