LIHU’E – The walls are alive with color at Kukui Grove in Lihu’e.
The Kaua’i Society of Artists is holding Art Kaua’i at the Kukui Grove Exhibition Hall in Lihu’e Aug.19 to Sept. 16.
Art Kaua’i solicited work from all adult members of the Kaua’i Society of Artists who are currently Kaua’i residents.
According to French, the annual Society art shows have been a Kaua’i event for more than 20 years.
Ninety-six artists submitted 286 entries into the show and 80 pieces by 51 artists are represented in the show – the exhibiting works, in all media were selected by Chicago artist and educator Candida Alvarez, the show’s juror.
Alvarez was brought in by Kaua’i Society of Artists President Sally French.
“I met her at the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington,” French said.
Pilchuck is a well-known school associated with famed Northwest artist and glassblower Dale Chihuli.
Other well known glassblowers, including Bill Morris, have also taught at Pilchuck.
Alvarez received her Master of Fine Arts Degree from Yale University School of Art in New Haven, Connecticut.
Alvarez is currently an assistant professor of Painting and Drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
She has previously taught at Rutgers University, Camden, New Jersey and Kenyon College.
Alvarez’s work has been exhibited both in the United States and abroad.
Last summer she was Artist in Residence at the International Artists Studio program in Stockholm, Sweden.
“It’s a beautiful show this year. She (Alvarez) has done a very selective hanging, a very open hanging,” French said.
There are nine awards, donated by county businesses, and there’s a juror’s award this year too.
“This is a show that is sometimes a beginning rung for artists (exhibiting) who are ready to step out. The show will be reviewed by the Honolulu Advertiser. There are lots of shows for beginning artists…this is more for people who want to go on in art,” French said.
Art Kaua’i 2000 is being held at the Kukui Grove Exhibition Hall.
Hours are 10 to 5, seven days a week, although French cautions that because all the docents are volunteers there may be some irregularities.
Admission is free.
