One of the feel-good stories of the year might be Travis Fernandez and the
Make-a-Wish Foundation.
The foundation is well-known for granting the
wishes of children stricken by cancer. When it asked Fernandez, a star
student-athlete in football and track at Waimea High School before being
sidelined by his illness, what he wanted, his reply wasn’t the customary trip
to Disneyland or material possession that benefactors usually request. Instead,
Fernandez said he wanted a new rubberized running track for Vidinha Stadium.
The $750,000 price for a track was too steep for Make-a-Wish. But the
organization did present a check this week for $10,000 for a high-jump pit in
Fernandez’s honor.
The young man thought of others when no one would blame
him for putting himself first. It doesn’t get much better than that.
