In the Nov. 11 edition, Stephanie Krieger wrote a letter to the Forum (“Beach
safety begins with communication”). Her comment regarding lifeguards and water
safety was cold and heartless. I quote, “Not even a lifeguard can save
some of those people who lost their lives.”
The families and friends
of those who have lost their lives surely wish that their loved ones had
survived. Rapid response by lifeguards may have made a difference in many
cases. The sooner a victim receives assistance, the more likely they will
survive and have a complete recovery from their trauma.
Water safety
education for visitors and residents is also very important. This paper several
months ago devoted the front page to the subject of drowning and water safety
here on Kaua’i. Recently, we have acquired several new lifeguard stations.
Progress is being made. One life saved is the Kaua’i spirit.
One life
saved is the aloha spirit. One life saved could have been my grandson.
