The lighting is part of the traditional holiday of Chanukah, which commemorates the historic victory of the Maccabees over Assyrian-Greek invaders in ancient Jerusalem. The battle to expel the non-Jewish invaders took three years.
In addition to the menorah lighting tomorrow at the mall, there will be traditional Chanukah songs, hot latkes, dreidels and Chanukah magazines.
A spokesperson at the Chabad of Hawai`i on O’ahu – sponsors of the event – said the ceremony and celebration is open to everyone on Kaua`i and is free.
Chabad of Hawai`i already had menorah-lighting celebrations on Maui and O’ahu on Dec. 21. The Kaua`i event is the third and final such ceremony in the state this holiday season.
The multiple menorah lightings are an annual event to celebrate the themes of struggle for religious and cultural freedom. Chanukah means dedication in Hebrew.
