Stormwater runoff and drainage – four words that few people pay attention to until they find out that the quality of their environmental surroundings is going down the drain.
That’s why a public meeting this Thursday in Lihu’e will probably draw scant attention from the citizens that the host, Kaua’i County Public Works Department, hopes will show up. Drainage is one of those out-of-sight, out-of-mind matters. But water flowing from rainfall and residential, commercial and industrial property into ditches and drains is everybody’s business, because the runoff eventually reaches streams, rivers and the ocean. And that’s where pollutants washing downstream can cause problems for the environment.
For the first time in 30 years, the county is updating its methods of managing runoff. Thursday’s meeting at 7 p.m. at Kaua’i War Memorial Convention Hall is an opportunity for the public to have a say on the subject before, rather than after they learn that it’s important.
