The state Department of Transportation’s final traffic safety message of 2000 is predictable but so important: Don’t ruin the holidays with drunk driving.
Kazu Hayashida, DOT’s director, puts it this way: “Everyone knows that along with the holidays comes added traffic, which creates more stress.
But add just one drunk driver to the equation, and our roadways become more than just stressful. They become life-threatening. An important way to prevent a tragedy during this joyful time of year is to be patient when driving in traffic, and by setting up a designated driver system with your family members and friends.” In a perfect world, there would be no such thing as intoxicated motorists. The world’s not perfect, though, so as many people heeding the advice from DOT and others is the best that can be expected.
Happy holidays. And please don’t drink and drive, either this time of year or any other.
