The Rookies stayed hot in Kaua’i Senior Citizens Softball action. The league leader picked up its fourth win in as many games with a 10-5 victory over East Kaua’i Saturday, March 17, at Isenberg Field. Archie Fontanilla picked up his third win of the season on the mound. Walter Souza cracked a two-run homer on three hits and Nelson Mendonca slapped a solo shot to lead The Rookies.
Walter Silva picked up his third loss for East Kaua’i. Alex Young got two home runs for the team. Silva, Ed Bales and Vince Ephan all banged out two hits for East Kaua’i.
The Lihu’e A’s, after suffering their first loss of the season last week, kept pace with The Rookies with a 17-7 win over The K-Makules. They improved their record to 3-1. Joe Brun went the distance for the A’s to pick up his second victory. Glen Akina rocketed a solo homer on three hits, and Yua Matsumura finished a perfect 3-for-3 off K-Makule pitcher Dado Paiste.
Francis Mission and Ray Cruz picked up two hits each for The K-Makules.
In the afternoon’s other game, West Kaua’i wasted little time disposing of Kawaihau, 17-5, to improve to 3-1 also. Pat Pauau cranked a three-run dinger in the top of the first inning, and Danny Manus smacked a two-run shot in the second inning to lead West Kaua’i on its way. Frank Bukoski went the distance for the win and helped himself at the plate with three hits. Casey Moniz also picked up three hits.
For The K-Makules, Ken Tamashiro was dealt the loss. K-Makules with two hits were Tamashiro, Loui Nuesco, Don Boro, Terry Pantohan and Gene Hornet.
West Kaua’i will host the Lihu’e A’s Saturday in the opener.
