The Kaua’i Collegiate Cup is returning to the Princeville Golf Course for the second consecutive year. In 2000, the University of San Diego became the inaugural champion with a victory over second place Western Kentucky.
The event will be played at the Makai Course, and host WKU will be back to challenge San Diego, also returning to defend its title. Action kicks off Friday morning with tee times beginning at 7 a.m.
Joining USD and Western Kentucky this year are Eastern Michigan, Drake, Dartmouth, the University of Cincinnati, Marquette and Samford.
The first and second rounds of the event will be played on Friday, with the final 18 holes slated for Saturday.
Teams are scheduled to arrive on the island today in preparation for an opening luau at 6:30 at the Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort.
In addition to the Collegiate Cup, Western Kentucky is scheduled to host a junior golf clinic today at 6:30 p.m. at the Puakea Golf Course in Lihu’e. Hilltopper coach Brian Tirpak will lead the clinic, and guest instructors will include Dartmouth coach Bill Johnson, a member of the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame; Drake coach Scott Bohlender, a former instructor for the Nicklaus/Flick golf schools; and Cincinnati assistant coach Billy Williamson, a 1998 Academic All-American and All-Mid-American Conference selection at Akron.
“We had a great turnout last year,” Tirpak said. “Kelly Pleas [Head Golf Pro at Puakea and president of the Kaua’i Junior Golf Association] has been extremely helpful in spreading the word across the island and helping us with this event.”
All Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation boys and girls high school golfers and KJGA members are invited to attend the clinic.
