Local Heroes make their communities better places to live.
The Garden Island salutes them.
Helping their community is becoming a tradition for a group of Kaua’i Community College students.
The students are members of the Pamantasan Club, which recently conducted its seventh annual Spring Health Food and Fund Drive as a benefit for the Kaua’i Food Bank.
The efforts of, among others, club officers Al Pandok (president), Jonalyn Delos Santos (treasurer) and Marikit Mariano (secretary) added to the food bank’s ability to serve about 5,000 people per month on Kaua’i and Ni`ihau. Money raised by the club went into a system which, for every dollar donated, can distribute about $16 worth of groceries to the needy.
Food is distributed through non-profit agencies and churches.
The food bank is a United Way agency.
