A muddy Waimea Ball Park forced the April 7 Kaua’i Senior Citizen Softball League to Kaumakani Field.
Once there, the undefeated Rookies took to whipping Kawaihau 18-10 to improve to 7-0 on the season. Archie Fontanilla picked up his sixth victory on the mound for the Rookies.
Hank Nishikawa led the Rookies with two home runs on three hits. Nellie Mendonca banged a homer on three hits and Ray Espino also slammed a dinger on two hits. Haru Maeda came up with a pinch-hit home run.
Ken Tamashiro picked up the loss for Kawaihau, but uncorked a grand slam at the plate. With two hits for Kawaihau were Mamo Matsumura, Alan Teves and Loui Nuesco.
In the second game, East Kaua’i torched the Lihu’e A’s 18-5, as Walter Silva picked up his fourth win. Joe Brun suffered his second loss.
Alex Youn got his fifth home run of the season on three base hits for East Kaua’i.
Also with two hits for East Kaua’i were Ed Bales, Ray Samfong, Joe Pendergest and John Garcia.
Ismo Yoshishigi, Chic Cacabalos and Joe Munachika all paired hits for the A’s.
In the final game of the day, West Kaua’i got by the K-Makules 11-6 on the strength of Joe Silva’s fourth win. Dado Piaste suffered his sixth loss of the season.
West Kaua’i’s Danny Manus got three hits. Ricky Caveiro banged out two singles.
For the K-Makules, Lefty Remata and Pen Pescador got three hits each, while Ernie Domingo and Dorie Remata got two hits each.
There will be no games played this Saturday, April 14. The league will resume play on April 21 at Kapa’a Ball Park.
