HANAPEPE — Standing on the field following the final out of Wednesday’s Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation contest was the future of Waimea baseball. Of the nine positions occupied, just three were held by seniors; there were no juniors.
And finally, the future had picked up a win in the present.
The Menehunes defeated Kapa’a 7-3 in what will stand as the final KIF competition until the teacher’s strike is resolved.
Rayson Cacal (1-1) was solid in picking up his first win. The sophomore gave up three hits, yielded eight walks, hit one batter and tossed one wild pitch. Despite the walks, Cacal controlled the Warriors’ lineup throughout the game. Freshman Shawn Yadao came on in the top of the seventh, struck out Jonathan Anchetta and picked up the save.
Kapa’a’s Robin Lore (1-1) was dealt his first loss of the season. The senior struck out two, walked three and gave up five runs on six hits. Sophomore Kyle Neuberger came on in relief in the fourth. He struck out three, and yielded two runs on four hits.
Kapa’a again hurt itself with errors, committing eight. Just four of Waimea’s runs were earned. The Menehunes committed five errors of their own.
Because of some controversy surrounding the second game of last Saturday’s doubleheader between Waimea and Kaua’i, the Menehunes record is not officially known. The Warriors dropped to 2-2 in the KIF.
