HANAPEPE — The later the day got, the wilder the action became at Hanapepe Stadium Saturday.
In the second game of a Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation doubleheader, Waimea led Kaua’i 7-4, and appeared to be in position to pick up its first win of the season. But in the top of the seventh inning, the Red Raiders sent 10 batters to the plate, bringing four of them home to take an 8-7 lead.
The game was called due to darkness. The final half-inning was tentatively scheduled to be played Monday, but nothing definitive was decided.
The wild contest stood in stark contrast to the day’s first game, a 3-2 Kaua’i victory.
In the opener, Red Raiders pitcher Scott Oshima lasted just one-and-one-third innings before being replaced by freshman Alec Reichle.
In his first regular-season outing, the high-school rookie was solid. He threw three-and-two-thirds innings, gave up no runs or hits, and struck out four Menehunes. He also walked four. Senior Mark Rodrigues picked up the save with two innings of work.
He may not have had his stuff on the mound, but Oshima responded at the plate. The senior cracked a home run in the second inning, walked twice and stole a base. In the second, Casey Oketani followed Oshima’s homer with a triple and was driven home by a Levi Rapozo sacrifice fly.
Reichle scored the Red Raiders’ other run on a Kwinton Estacio single.
Waimea (0-3) stayed in the contest with two runs in the bottom of the second. Jay Parinas and Oliver Moniz accounted for those.
Rayson Cacal went the distance but picked up the loss for the Menehunes. He gave up eight hits and walked four Red Raiders in addition to yielding three runs.
Kaua’i stands at 2-0 on the season.
