Waimea athletes fare well at Punahou meet
Some members of the Waimea High School track & field team traveled to Oahu March 31 to compete in a meet hosted by Punahou. The Buffnblu annually boast one of the top girls’ track teams in the state, and often compete for the championship.
Also supplying entrants to the meet was Mililani, Iolani, Pac-5, Sacred Hearts and defending state boys champion Kamehemeha. A team from Canada also competed in the event.
The Menehunes’ most impressive performance came from senior Stanley Gucwa-Bucasis. The captain, fully recovered from an injury that had hampered him for some time, set a personal record (PR) in the 110-meter hurdles. His :16.3 also qualified Bucasis for the state meet, should the current teacher’s strike be resolved in time to allow for the meet.
In addition, Bucasis ran a :41.4 in the 300-meter hurdles, where he finished third. Only a near crash prevented the Menehune from upsetting the state leader in the event.
Rosanna Estes turned in the most impressive female performance for Waimea. The senior ran the 100-meter dash in :13.3, good enough for a third-place finish and the 200-meter dash in :27.6, which earned her a fourth-place finish.
Here are some other results from the meet:
Melissa Bartlett — Finished sixth in the 800-meter run with a PR of 2:37.1
Jonathan Patterson — Ran two PRs at the meet, in the 800 (2:17.2) and the 1500-meter run (4:48.1)
Wesley Manuel — Finished third with a high jump of 5-feet-10; also ran the 400-meter run (:44.3)
Kaleb Rosa — Senior threw the discus 119-8 and the shot put 38-3
Nancy Yonahara — Ran the 100 in :14
Kyle Yokoyama — Junior set to PRs; finished fourth in the 100 (:11.3) and fifth in the 200 (:23.82)
Jannah Tafua — Sophomore ran the 100-meter hurdles in :20.21
Alaine Aipolani — In her first trip, the freshman set a PR in the shot put (24-5) and heaved the discus 68-8
