It’s midseason, and Kaua’i Polo Club took the opportunity to whip Bali Hai Realty 5 to 1. With the likes of former 9 goaler Stuart McKenzie on the opposing team, Bali Hai knew it was going to be a tough day. Right after the first bowl-in, the race for control was on.
McKenzie passed a long shot to Peter Cameron who rode smoothly to the pylons to score for Kaua’i. Frantic scuffles ensued, resulting in five bowl-ins and defensive and offensive runs from one end of the field to the other. Then McKenzie set up again for Cameron, who, in a two-shot run, scored at the end of the first chukker for a 2-0 Kaua’i lead.
John Elwin took over for Kaua’i early in the second chukker, scoring at one end of the field and coming back to score again with an outstanding back shot. Kaua’i led 4-0 at the end of chukker 2.
With a split team change of riders, visiting player Gary Pollack (president of the Silicon Valley Polo Club in California) replaced Linda Gallagher for Bali Hai. Pollack and Kamalu Sheldon were nursing the ball toward the goal when McKenzie rode in to spoil the effort in a big way.
He stole the ball and took it downfield to score at the other end of the field. Pollack rose to the challenge and thwarted McKenzie’s next attempt to score by riding him off just before the bell sounded to end the third chukker.
Bali Hai was determined to at least get on the board in the fourth chukker. Sheldon and Jana Mailow were well on their way to a goal when the ball was stolen again by McKenzie. Then Hal Hargrave, who had substituted for Bali Hai’s Kim Kelly for the last chukker, charged the ball, hit a terrific back shot and followed up with a 100-yard scoring shot at the bell, finally avoiding a shut out for Bali Hai.
