Two-day youth basketball camp
The Kaua’i Youth Basketball Association has completed a very successful summer of hoops that saw the number of participating teams jump from 29 to 35.
But things don’t stop just yet.
The KYBA is offering a summer youth basketball clinic on August 3-4 for boys and girls competing at the intermediate or high school level. Aiea High School head coach Fran Kahawaii and her staff will conduct the sessions. They will be sharing the Aiea girls’ basketball system that won the team the 2001 state high school championship.
Sessions will offer tips and technique for offense, defense and combined skill play beginning Friday, Aug. 3 at Kalaheo Neighborhood Center. The program will run all day on Saturday, Aug. 4 at the Kapa’a High School Gym.
Registration cost is just $15 for two days. To sign up, contact Karen Matsumoto at 332-9958.
Cheerleading camp
The University of Hawai’i cheerleaders will be offering the 2001 Pop Warner Youth Camp August 25-26 at the University of Hawai’i athletic complex.
Cheers, chants, dances and stunts will be taught by the nationally-ranked UH cheerleaders. Camp days are Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m..
The fee is $50 per participant and the deadline for registration is Monday, Aug. 20. For an application and more information, call the cheerleading office at 956-4503.
Na Kani Koa, Maui to battle for crown
Two teams that handed the Kaua’i Cowboys significant losses during this year’s Hawai’i Football League will duke it out for the championship in Tsunami Bowl IX.
Oahu’s Na Kani Koa will travel to play the Maui Stars at Keopualani Park in Kahului, Maui at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 28.
Na Kani Koa (4-2-1) is the defending HFL champion. This will be the team’s second-ever trip to the Tsunami Bowl. Maui (6-1) is making its sixth trip to the Big Game. A win would give the Stars their fourth title.
Kaua’i finished the season 1-4.
KGA Volunteer Days
The Kaua’i Golf Association will continue its Volunteer Days on Saturday, July 28, at Wailua Golf Course.
From 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., volunteers will weed the grounds around the course. Volunteers are reminded to bring their own weeding tools, preferably mini-machete type knives. No picks or hoes.
The KGA will continue its volunteer weeding schedule on August 4 and August 11.
Questions should be directed to Dick Ueoka, president of the KGA, at 246-6646.
The KGA is made up of 45 golf clubs with approximately 850 members.
