Almost everyone will get to celebrate, not work
Police and fire crews will be on duty as usual tomorrow as the nation celebrates Independence Day for the 225th time.
The federal, state and county holiday means nearly all governmental offices will be closed, including post offices, public libraries, schools, Kaua’i Community College, Kaua’i County facilities such as swimming pools, county refuse transfer stations (Princeville, Kapa’a, Lihu’e and Hanapepe) and the Kekaha Landfill.
Summer youth programs, including summer school and the county’s summer enrichment program, also will take the day off. And the Kaua’i Bus won’t be operating.
There will be regular residential trash collection, according to the county public information office.
As far as government workers, after the county police, fire and trash-collection crews, just about everyone else will be off for the Fourth.
And lots of people in the private and public sector have scheduled vacation time on either side of the Independence Day holiday, to make long, long weekends out of the mid-week holiday.
Working to make the holiday time safe will be Police Department crews. They will be out in force at sobriety checkpoints at various locations around the island beginning today and running for six consecutive days.
Statewide, the state Department of Transportation is teaming up with the police departments of the four counties in an effort to make the holiday free of roadway fatalities.
Nationally, alcohol or drugs are contributing factors in 38 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes. Every 33 minutes, someone is killed because of an impaired driver. Officials remind everyone getting into a vehicle to buckle up.
As far as activities, the major holiday event tomorrow locally is the Kaua’i Hospice 12th annual 4th of July Concert in the Sky, featuring games, activities, entertainment and food, and a fireworks display set to music just after dark. The fun starts at 3 p.m. Tickets will be on sale at the gate.
