The crew of the sailing canoe Kamakakoa won the 15th Na Holo Kai 70-mile cross-Kauai channel race on Saturday.
Steersman Marvin Otsuji’s crew barely beat out his wife Katie Otsuji’s crew aboard Tui Tonga in one of the closest finishes in the history of the popular race.
The lead boats surfed into Kalapaki Bay neck to neck with only a 15 second difference in their times.
The sail and paddle from Hale’iwa on O’ahu’s North Shore to the beach at Kalapaki took 9 hours, 3 minutes, 28 seconds.
Low seas and light winds of 10-15 knots kept the the canoes from recording fast times crossing the channel.
Seven canoes were entered in the race which was first held in 1987 to mark the Year of the Hawaiian.
