Man believed to have stabbed teenage girlfriend
Kaua’i County Police yesterday arrested a man suspected of stabbing a teenage girl Sunday at a residence.
Jonathan Kalani Ibana, 21, who was wanted in connection with an investigation of attempted murder, was apprehended at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort in Wailua at 2 p.m., less than four hours after a front-page article in The Garden Island about the case brought Crimesstoppers tips to police.
“He was just cruising through the lobby,” Lt. Alvin Seto said.
Seto said there had been a previous call, placing the suspect in the Wailua area, and then a second call putting him at the hotel.
“They were just good citizens doing their duty,” Seto said of the callers, who will split an unspecified reward.
Seto said Ibana offered no resistance when officers approached him.
Ibana allegedly stabbed a 14-year-old female at a home in the Wailua Homesteads late Sunday night.
The victim, known to Ibana before the attack, was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital Sunday. She remained there Tuesday morning, according to police. Information on her condition was not available.
Ibana was processed yesterday afternoon at the Lihu’e police station after his arrest on charges of attempted murder. Bail had not been set by early this morning, and Ibana was to be transferred to the Kaua’i Community Correctional Center.
