Rodeo was held over three days
Shawn Aguiar was the overall winner of the Second Annual Koloa Plantation Days Rodeo, sponsored by the Kaua’i Rodeo Club, Hawai’i Tourism Authority, Kaua’i Economic Development Board and the Hawai’i Economic Development Board as well as many others.
The rodeo was held over three days and included all of the events that make rodeo exciting: bareback and saddle bronco riding, barrel racing, steer undecorating, roping events and bull riding.
Bucking broncs were brought in from O’ahu. Cattle and other rough stock were corralled from around Kaua’i. There was also a double mugging competition.
In that event, one cowboy, from his horseback, ropes the head of the steer. A second cowboy runs across the arena to tackle the steer, while the first dismounts his horse and ties up the steer’s legs. The event was a crowd-pleaser. Many energetic steers wrapped the cowboys in rope, then ran them over as they galloped away in victory.
Three- to nine-year-olds enjoyed “Stick Pony” races organized by the official rodeo clown races held throughout the rodeo.
Little cowhands ran around barrels in the soft dirt of the arena to win shave ice and bubble gum.
Kainoa Ohana provided fun music after the final day of competition.
Kaua’i Rodeo fans are invited to come out and watch any of many rodeos scheduled throughout the year. For more information, see Kaua’i’s Rodeo website: kauairodeo.org.
