Boats will hit the water Saturday at Po’ipu Beach
The first Kaiholo Canoe Club paddleboard and one-man outrigger canoe races are set for Saturday, September 15.
The races will run from Po’ipu Beach to the river mouth of the Hanapepe River.
Eddie Pratt, head of the Kaiholo club, is organizing the event.
Pratt said paddlers will paddle nine to ten miles in completing the race.
The canoe club has plans to make the race an annual event.
Pratt said the paddleboard contest will begin at 8 a.m. The starting line is on the beach just east of the Sheraton Po’ipu.
Paddleboard racing has become a popular sport in Hawai’i over the past decade.
Similar races on the North Shore of O’ahu and other locations in Hawai’i are drawing a growing number of competitors from Hawai’i, California and other coastal areas.
Sponsors of the event include Kai Kane in Hanalei, Hanalei Surf Company, Mike Your of Wave Riders Against Drugs and the Kikiaola Land Company of Waimea.
Winners will be awarded trophies and prizes.
