Next week will mark the beginning of the 2001 Hawaiian Surfing Federation season when Contest No. 1 is held at Prince Kuhio. The September 15-16 event has make-up dates of September 22-23 already in place.
The event is just the first in a series of six contests that will be held over the next several months around Kaua’i. The location and dates are as follows:
Major’s Bay, November 17-18; Pine Trees, January 12-13; Kealia/Davidson’s, February 16-17; Pine Trees, March 16-17; Prince Kuhio, May 4-5. Each contest has make-up dates scheduled one week after the original date.
All of the events will be rated. Year-end ratings and state championship qualification will be based on four of five events.
Competition will be held in various categories. They are: Menehune (12-under), Boys (13-14), Junior Men (15-17), Open Men (18-24), Women, Masters (25-24, one heat only), Senior Men (35-over, one heat), Boys bodyboard (14-under), Junior bodyboard (15-17), Men’s bodyboard (18-over).
Six will compete in preliminary heats. Heats will last 15 minutes and be judged based on the best three waves. In the finals, competitors will be given 20 minutes and be judged on their best four waves.
HSF members will be charged $20 to enter one division and $10 for each additional division. Non-members will pay $30 for one division and $15 for any thereafter.

Senior golf reminder
Members of the Kaua’i Senior Golf Club are reminded that the third quarterly tournament is scheduled for September 29 at Wailua Golf Course. Entry forms are available at the course.
Deadline for entry is September 19.
Kaua’i junior tennis
Kaua’i Junior Tennis Association (KJTA) invites junior players to the Fall Jr. Novice and Intermediate Tournament on September 15-16 at the Kiahuna Tennis Club.
Singles and doubles are offered in 10, 12, 14, 16 & 18 year-old divisions.
Entry fees are $10 for singles and $20 per team for doubles. The entry deadline is Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. Please mail USTA form and check payable to KJTA to Mrs. Shelley Konishi, 4264 Kaana St., Lihue, HI 96766.
