Theodore Clay (Ted) Stafford of Kapa’a, died of AIDS Sept. 18, 2001, at home at the age of 48.
A retired attorney, who was once a special assistant to the U.S. Assistant Attorney in Washington, D.C., he was the treasurer of the Board of Directors of Malama Pono Kaua’i AIDS project. He was an AIDS advocate and talked to teens at Kaua’i High School about AIDS.
He devoted his life to helping people infected with and affected by HIV / AIDS. He was on the Board of Directors of Wellspring Foundation and Central Coast Congregate Care of Santa Barbara. He negotiated construction and housing contracts with local, state and federal government agencies and worked with other nonprofit organizations coordinating HIV / AIDS care.
He is survived his companion and soul mate of eight years, Ron Moreno; Robert Moreno, extended family of Kaua’i, the Michael Koerte family of Hanamaulu, Malama Pono family, two sisters and nieces in California and many friends.
A service will be held at Garden Island Mortuary in Lawai on Tuesday, Sept. 25. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. with service to follow at noon at the mortuary. Casual attire is suggested. In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to Malama Pono, where a special fund will be established in his name.
A service will also be at the Saddleback Chapel Mortuary in Orange County, Calif. with interment to follow at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery.
Mary Nawai
Mary Kaualoku Nawai of Waimea, Kaua’i, died Sept. 20, 2001, at her home in Waimea at the age of 64.
A homemaker, she was born Dec. 4, 1936, in Makaweli, Kaua’i. She was active in the United Church of Christ and the Waimea choir.
She is survived by three brothers: Robert K. Nawai, Albert L. Nawai, and Hilgard O. Kaialau; three sisters: Matilda Warlenten, Elizabeth Freitas and Otilia Kauhaha; several nieces and nephews.
Friends and family may call on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Waimea Foreign Church at 10 a.m. for services. Inurnment to follow.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick/Kaua’i Mortuary.
Doris Sugano
Doris Sugano of Kapa’a, Kaua’i, died Sept. 18, 2001, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 87.
A homemaker, she was born June 27, 1914, in Koloa, Kaua’i.
She is survived by two sons: Russell Sugano of Kapa’a and Albert (Amy) Sugano of Oregon; one grandchild, one great grandchild; several nieces and nephews.
Private services were held. Arrangements were handled by Borthwick/Kaua’i Mortuary.
Michael Kinkki
Michael Kinkki of Kekaha, Kauai, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Sept. 10, 2001, at the age of 54.
Born in Carleton, MN on June 12, 1947, he was a Corian Fabricator with Waihona Cabinets. A top athlete in high school and college, he played basketball for Mission Bay High and the University of Colorado/Boulder. He was active in the adult basketball leagues on Kaua’i and surfed and body surfed. He was also an active member of the Kikiaola Small Boat Club and avid fisherman. He has been a licensed boat captain since 1974.
He is survived by his wife: Susan Lee Kinkki of Kekaha, Kauai; three sons: Bernie (Mary) Wright of Austin, TX, Elton Julyan Kinkki of Kauai, and Mikko (Brooklyn) Kinkki of Kekaha, Kauai; one granddaughter, Victoria Kinkki; two sisters: Kathleen Anderson of Pacific Beach, Calif. and Sara Kinkki of Pacific Beach, Calif.; numerous nephews and cousins.
Funeral service has been scheduled at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, at Oomana Point in Kekaha (dig ditch) across from the house at 8689 Elepaio Rd.. There will be a paddle out to Big Mike’s Peak at Kinkki’s Corner where his cremains and flower leis will be scattered.
Casual attire is suggested, in lieu of flowers monetary donations will be deeply appreciated.

Gualberto Ormi
Gualberto “Jack” Ormi, of ‘Ele’ele, Kauai, died at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital on Sept. 13, 2001, at the age of 91.
Born n Cabugao Ilocos Norte, Philippines on July 10, 1910, he was a Stevedore.
He is survived by nephews.
Friends may visit at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Sacred Hearts Catholic Church in Eleele; mass officiated by Father Keahi will begin at 10 a.m. Casual attire is suggested.

James M. Iwamoto
James M. Iwamoto, of Kapa’a, Kaua’i, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Sept. 6, 2001, at the age of 78.
Born in Kapa’a, Kaua’i on Oct. 31, 1922, he was a retired Post Master with Kalaheo Post Office.
He is survived by: his wife: Annie Iwamoto of Kapa’a, Kaua’i’ two sons: Myles (Payge) Iwamoto of Makakilo, O’ahu and Kerwin (Roxane) Iwamoto of Hilo, Big Island; three daughters: Susan Shimazu of Kapa’a, Kaua’i, Donna Iwamoto of Honolulu, O’ahu, and Janice Iwamoto of Honolulu, O’ahu; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother: Yuzuru Iwamoto of Kapa’a, Kaua’i; two sisters: Shizuko Shiramizu of Lihu’e, Kaua’i; Arleen (Norman) Kawamoto of Pearl City, O’ahu; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sueto Daida
Sueto “Pete” Daida, of Lawai, Kauai, died at home on Sept. 16, 2001, at the age of 73.
Born in Lawai, Kauai on Sept. 25, 1927, he was a retired Carpenter of Shioi Construction.
He is survived by: one son: Scott (Bernal Naholoholo) Daida of Lawai, Kauai; two daughters: Vicki (Keenan) Eto of Wailuku, Maui and Apryle (Willie) Kashiwabara of Hanapepe, Kauai; five grandchildren; three brothers: Sadamu (Gladys) Daida of Lawai, Kauai, Masami (Margaret) Daida of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Masao (Adeline) Daida of Kahului, Maui; sister: Machie Fukushima of Kapa’a, Kaua’i; sisters-in-law, Toshie Daida of Lawai and Nancy Daida of Lihu’e; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel; service officiated by Rev. John Lunn will begin at 5 p.m. Casual attire is suggested and flowers omitted.

Sebastian Torres, Jr.
Sebastian “Saba Kachi Kachi King” Torres, Jr. of Kalaheo, Kaua’i, died Sept. 11, 2001, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 72.
A supervisor for the sugar industry with McBryde Sugar, he was born Jan. 12, 1929, in Lawai, Kaua’i.
He is survived by two brothers: Daldo Torres of Numila and Johnny (Frances) Torres of Lawai; two sisters: Emily (Jody) Dela Torre of Kekaha and Marie (Ernest) Coyaso of Omao; Cory & Elise Silver and daughter Coryssa; cousin: Arthur (Beatrice) Camacho, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 22, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kalaheo from 8:30 a.m. Mass to be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Burial to follow at the Catholic Church cemetery in Kalaheo. Services to be celebrated by Father Keahi.

Adelaida Sotelo
Adelaida Yago Sotelo of Puhi died Sept. 11, 2001, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, on the age of 78.
A homemaker, she was born May 9, 1923, in the Philippines.
She is survived by one daughter: Anita (Ernesto) Yoro of Puhi; two sisters: Maria Abella of the Philippines and Matilde Arieta of the Philippines; one brother: David (Marlene) Yago of the Philippines; three grandchildren, one great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends and family may call on Friday, Sept. 21, at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. where services will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Lihu’e Public Cemetety.
