Which KIF volleyball team is going to win round two?
There really is no clear-cut answer.
Almost every game this season has been decided by a crucial final point, and nearly every team has swapped wins and defeats at least once.
But last night, Kaua’i became the current frontrunner for second round honors, topping Kapa’a in another KIF nail-biter, 13-9, 16-14.
Kapa’a came out strong in the first, accumulating a comfortable 9-5 lead sparked by two Garrett Danner kills and a few Kaua’i defensive lapses.
But the Red Raiders battled back from the deficit, scoring 10 unanswered points led by the emphatic play of Lionel Tomacder (11 kills, 1 ace).
Tomacder was electric.
From his performance thus far in the second round, he has quickly developed into one of the premiere killers in the KIF.
The Warriors again took the early lead in the second, climbing to a 3-0 advantage.
But once Kaua’i gained possession of the ball on the ensuing side-out, Jason Sahara answered with a huge block that fueled another Red Raider run. Kaua’i led 7-3 in the middle of the second game, and maintained that lead until the two minute mark.
Kapa’a’s Vincent Dora kept the Warriors in the hunt until the very end, slamming three consecutive kills which tied the game at 13.
But Kaua’i’s Eric Fujikawa, who played a pivotal role in front of the net throughout the match, ended all hope for a Warrior comeback, dropping a side-out kill which eventually led to a 16-14 Red Raider victory.
