A 44-year-old Kapa’a man died yesterday from internal injuries after his car ran out of control and ram into a utility pole on Kuhio Highway next to Kealia Beach.
The man, whose name was not released pending notification of his death to family members, was transported by ambulance to Wilcox Hospital after the 5:21 p.m. accident, according to the Kaua’i fire department.
The man apparently succumbed to injuries at the hospital.
Firefighters from the Kapa’a station used a Jaws of life apparatus to remove the man from a Mercedes Benz station wagon, which was compressed after the impact, the fire department said.
Tim Stokesbary, an off-duty firefighter and rescue specialist from Lihu’e, was the first person on the scene to administer aid. American Medical Response paramedics and firefighters treated the man later.
The man, who was wearing a seat belt, was apparently the only occupant in the vehicle. Police have started an investigation in the cause of the accident.
