Kapa’a (2-3) did not complete a single pass the entire game, but that didn’t stop them from beating Kaua’i (1-5) 9-7 in a muddy showdown at Vidinha Stadium last night.
As they have in the past, they did it all on the ground. Picking up 110 first-half yards, and taking the lead on a third-quarter, 34-yard Dustin Mundon run.
The Warriors’ defense played strong all night, holding Kaua’i on the first drive and handing the reigns to QB Alan Iloreta with good field position. Kapa’a drove up the field on two sizeable Tyler Wakuta carries, succesfully penetrating the neutral zone but failing to reach the end zone. Iloretta kicked a 23 yard field goal on fourth down: 3-0 Kapa’a.
An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty killed the Red Raiders drive at the onset of the second quarter, putting them back 15-yards.
But no matter.
On the Warrior’s ensuing drive, Beau Marchino fumbled on the Kapa’a 25-yard line, giving the Red Raiders good field position to charge for the end-zone.
The Red Raiders would capitalize, but not without a little help. Following an encroachment call against the Warriors, giving Kaua’i a first down and an opportunity to score on the next play, Jameson Smith ran in an easy five-yard TD giving the Red Raiders their first score of the evening: 7-3.
This score would remain until the second half, but the game would take a crucial turn at the onset of the second.
Mundon ran the ball 34-yards for a Warrior TD and gave the homecoming team the lead, which turned out to be the final score: 9-7.
The Red Raiders tried to answer in the fourth, but were stifled by a suffocating Warrior defense.
Kapa’a gained a total of 174 yards, all on the ground. Mundon led with 84 yards on 10 carries. Wakuta gained 62 yards on 17 carries.
The Red Raiders gained a total of 143 yards of offense last night-76 yards in the air and 67 yards on the ground. Quarterback Kamoi Refamonte threw 14 passes and completed five.
