One of the 11 police officers and two civilian employees that graduated in the 71st Recruit Class has his badge pinned by a proud parent during Friday night’s commencement program held at the Holiday Inn SunSpree Hotel. The graduation was the culmination of the first program held under the police academy in conjunction with the Kaua’i Community College and coordinated by Lt. Miles Tanabe. In addition to being the first police academy program, this was the largest number of police officers to graduate from a recruit class in 17 years, said Mayor Maryanne Kusaka. Several of the officers are already on duty, taking a shift starting Saturday night. Staff Photo by Dennis Fujimoto
