The Wailua Kryptonite are the newest expansion team in a league of four, and the championship team of last year (Anahola) can’t seem to get their attendance together.
But in this case, contraction isn’t the answer.
Anahola played with only nine players on Sunday against the young, speedy, full-line of the Kryptonite. Kaena Mayer is an example of this young talent, who had the first two goals created by great passes up the left wing.
Mayer managed to keep the ball on the ground when he shot it past the Hui goalie.
The third goal from the Kryptonite was on a text book give-and-go play between Terje Haakonsen and Duncan MacDonald. With the score 3-0 in the second half, the Hui got angry and moved Chono Fernandez up the front to help score some goals.
That’s just what he did.
Fernandez started by beating the sweeper to a ball in the air, containing it and then shooting it into the net. However on the ensuing kick off, Wailua scored from the hustling efforts of Kit Owen, who tipped a loose ball past the goaltender. Shortly afterwards, Fernandez again beat a few defenders and made a play to Dan Priggie, who buried the ball in the goal.
Unfortunately, Anahola’s come-back hopes were snipped by two consecutive scores by Lucas Hassett. The Kapa’a Paint Kryptonite win decidedly, 6-2.
Hanalei Soccer Club 1, Westside Afterburners 1
In a much less action packed game, the Country Broker Hanalei S.C. and Westside Afterburners ended in 1-1 a tie.
During the first half, Hanalei had extensive scoring chances but only managed to capitalize on one of them. The goal came from Jamie Carter, when a corner kick sent across the box by Nicolas Ciaffone deflected to the foot of Jamie waiting at the back door.
The first half ended with the score 1-0.
Then as the teams switched sides it seamed they also switched playing styles. The Hanalei team spent the second half on their heals getting beat to almost every ball. The Afterburners tied the game up with a cross-shot from Josh Rudinoff, who pinpointed the top right corner, of the goal.
Hanalei goalie, Bobby Tangelder believed the ball was going out and didn’t make a play on the ball.
The frustration came out in the form of Red and Yellow Cards.
Doug Loper received a classic red card for being dragged five yards by Mark Perales’ shorts, which proceeded to rip in half.
Play will resume after the Holidays, in January.
