Coupons for confirmed interisland air travel that have no expiration date and are good on any flight, any day, and are priced well below regular fares, are sold by Aloha Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines to their employees.
At Aloha, the coupons go for $45, and each employee may buy up to 10 a year. The only safeguard against profiteering on by employees is that they must sign a form promising not to re-sell the coupons.
What the form doesn’t say is that the company really doesn’t want the employees selling the coupons for more than their face value. At $39, that’s nearly half the going rate for one-way interisland travel, compared to published fares and coupons sold by travel agents.
So, it stood to reason that when the merger of the two carriers was announced last month, those who hadn’t bought their 10 coupons for 2001 rushed to do so. And those who had purchased their allotted 10 were looking for co-workers who hadn’t.
That process started anew this year, especially for part-time employees who aren’t sure they’ll be part of the plan after the two carriers become one.
