“She is watching
“herself move across
“the wall like a shadow.”
That description of Natalie Urminska’s “Self Portrait” could very well describe the patrons stopping by the Kukui Grove Center exhibition hall to take in the Garden Island Arts Council’s “Portraits of Kaua’i” exhibit that will run through March 3.
Urminska, a graduate of Kapa’a High School who went on to study creative writing and photography, is among the numerous artists in the mall show.
Also featured is guest artist Blaine Michioka of Rainbow Photography and a special exhibit by Pat L. Griffin, titled “Portraits of Chicago Sitting Pretty.”
People can freely wander through the exhibit. One patron called her visit to the show “the most refreshing 20 minutes I’ve spent today.”
The arts council sees the event as the “essence of people on this island,” utilizing any form of art, including sculpture, two-dimensional art, photography, performance art and installations.
A special category of works on oral histories video depicts stories of Kaua’i done in cooperation with Hoike Kaua’i Community Television and Kaua’i Community College.
Tying in with the Portraits exhibit is the ongoing Reflections school art contest for Kaua’i schoolchildren from all grades.
Additional information on the show is available from the arts council at 246-4561 and giac@hawaiian.net.
