The Quaterback Challenge gave lookers, young and old, an opportunity to see their favorite quaterback at work.
There were 2,500 kids ranging from first grade to high school that had the chance to see these signal callers at work. The list of quaterbacks who were there ranged from Aaron Brooks of the New Orleans Saints to Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady of the New England Patriots.
We were honored to have UH football coach June Jones start the commencement ceremonies. Not to mention that John Elway was present in the celebrity tent with June hiding from the sun.
In the quaterback Challenge, there were six competitors all fighting for the honor to take home the million-dollar prize. The six competitors were grilled on agility, speed, and accuracy tests.
San Francisco’s leading man Jeff Garcia captured the $80,000 purse by three points over Aaron Brooks.
During the competition, Brooks was the unanimous favorite among the students present. He explained that it didn’t matter if he won as long as he made the kids smile.
Asked whether he liked Kaua’i, Brooks said “Are you crazy? I love it here,” as he happily signed autographs.
The others were also nice and never turned away anyone who wanted an autograph or picture.
The quaterback challenge gave our island a visitor promotion that’s trying to boost our economy. Onlookers came to watch the Quarterback Challenge from all over the United States, including New York, California, and Arizona, and gave them the opportunity to see our island and travel.
