Changes in the boundaries of the state legislative districts could cause confusion for voters in this year’s statewide elections.
The state’s 2001 Reapportionment Plan renumbered House districts. For Kaua’i, that includes designating the former District 12 (the North Shore) District 14, and the former District 14 (the West Side) becoming District 16. District 13 in the middle of the island now is District 15.
Also coming with this year’s election, Kaua’i will no longer be represented by two state senators. The expanded Senate District 7 will now include all of Kaua’i and Niihau.
“It is especially important for the voters of Kaua’i County to be aware of the changes to the district boundaries,” said county clerk Peter Nakamura. “While all of Kauai’s residents are affected by the new Reapportionment Plan, voters most likely will be impacted the most because they may be assigned to a different polling place, beginning with the primary election” Sept. 21.
For a smooth transition, voters are advised by election officials to carefully read the Notice of Voter Registration and Address Confirmation that will be mailed to all registered voters in May.
“If voters are affected by a polling place change, the postcard will provide this information,” Nakamura said.
