The onset of the week has been a whirlwind of community basketball, beginning with Girls Under-12 league play from last Saturday to Boys Under-14 on Tuesday.
Westside Hornets’ Tori Espino scored eight points to lead her team to a 25-14 win over Kilauea #1 in a three-game Girls 12-under series at Kalaheo N.C. gymnasium Saturday, Feb. 23.
Kapua Chandler and Haley Miranda each put in four for Kilauea #1.
In the second game, Kilauea #2 topped the Kapa’a Ladybugs 23-18 on seven points from April Johnson. Mailika Napoleon scored seven for Kapa’a.
The Lihue Raiders ran off with a 26-12 victory over Hanamaulu #2 Coyotes in the third game in Kalaheo. Shelcie Rapozo DelaCruz scored nine points for the Raiders, Maria Gascon notched six for the Coyotes.
The Boys Under-14 league also tipped off on Saturday at Kalaheo, and the Lihue Lakers, Kalaheo Pistons and Kapa’a Warriors each notched wins.
It took the Lakers an overtime period to defeat the Westside Hornets in the first game. With the help of scoring leader John Penn’s 13 points, the Lakers got the edge and the 44-42 win. Chad Barba scored 13 for the Hornets.
The Kalaheo Pistons took over the Lihue Kings with a slim 43-39 win. Josh Bradbury scored 12 for the Pistons and Lucky Andres and Kalau Hammond each notched nine points for the Kings.
The Kapa’a Warriors’ Michael Lindsey scored 15 points, which was enough to send his team to a 49-35 victory over the Puhi Wildcats. Brandon Ballesteros scored 18 for the Wildcats.
Boys 14-Under action continued with another three-game series Tuesday night at Kalaheo.
Kilauea topped the Lihue Lakers 33-24 on 10 points from Kahua Hollinger. John Penn notched eight for the Lakers.
The Puhi Wildcats fell to the Lihue Kings 40-25 in the second game of community hoops action.
Jeremy Victor, Bradley Semana and Kaleo Perez each scored six points for the Kings; Brandon Ballesteros scored nine for the Wildcats.
In the final game, the Westside Hornets topped the Kalaheo Pistons 47-26.
Chad Barba led the Hornets with 19 points; Josh Bradbury and Alan Kalili each scored nine points for the Pistons.
