Jordon Dizon had another 20 point showing, but it wasn’t enough to tame the Baldwin Bears, who jumped to an early 14-point first half lead en route to a 37-28 drubbing of the Waimea Menehunes at the HHSAA State Championships Wednesday at Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu.
The Bears took a 12-9 lead in the first quarter let by 12 with two minutes remaining in the third, and coasted to a win and a chance to play in the consolation final.
The Menehunes, who fell to the Mililani Trojans 65-47 Tuesday night, has been knocked out of the tourney.
Dizon added seven rebounds to his impressive point total. The forward, who amassed 47 points in two games at the tourney, is among the top scorers in state championship play.
Winnie Arios scored four points on 1-7 shooting, and Darwin Tutop and Desmond Rodrigues each notched two.
The Bears’Akamu Aki came off the bench to lead Baldwin with 11 points.
In other games, King Kealakehe hung close to Punahou for three quarters, but in the end the Buffanblu pulled away from the Waveriders and earned spot in tomorrow night’s consolation final.
The Waveriders were able to cut the lead to 56-51, but the Buffanblu went on a 22-7 run in the last five minutes to seal the victory. Ely Sather had a big night for Kealakehe, leading all scorers with 28 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Castle used their size and speed to help shut down Waiakea. The Knights held BIIF star Brandon Kawazoe to a single point, and got good production from their big men en route to a 71-51 victory and a spot in tomorrow’s fifth-place game.
The game was tied 29-29 going into the half, but Castle went on a 16-1 run midway through the third to blow the game open.
Castle’s Michael Proctor led all scorers with 16 points.
Kamehameha advanced to tomorrow’s fifth place game with a win over MIL Champion Lahainaluna.
The Warriors and the Lunas had the first overtime game of the tournament, playing to a 49-49 tie in regulation.
Lahainaluna led by three with less than ten seconds remaining in regulation, but Eric Shaver hit a trey to tie it.
