The Council’s Planning Committee also approved First Assembly of God King’s Cathedral plans for a church on the mauka side of Kuhio Highway in Hanama’ulu town.
The church, which has headquarters on Maui and branches on Kaua’i, proposes to build on 14 acres a multi-purpose building and other structures. Plans also call for a school, a sanctuary, recreational facility and a park for youths.
The church got the go ahead for its project when the Council committee agreed to delete a zoning condition for the land. In 1989, when the Council rezoned the property from agricultural to industrial use, it stipulated to Amfac, the landowner at the time, that the land would revert to its previous zoning if the lot were sold.
That condition was inserted in the zoning ordinance because of public concerns that a resort developer would buy the land and use it for resort purposes.
Residents feared that type of use would not be compatible with the residential nature of Hanama’ulu town.
The property, however, remained in cane cultivation and was fallow before First Assembly of God bought the land. The full Council is expected to vote on the church proposal next week.
