A sea of female surfers dominated Hanalei Bay last weekend, competing for top prize in the annual Roxy Surf Jam contest at Pine Trees.
Kristen Steiner edged Bethany Hamilton for top honors in the 13 & Under shortboard division. They were followed by Paige Alms, Alana Blanchard, Camille Brady and Andrianna Mendivil, each of whom made it to Sunday’s finals.
Alms rebounded to take the longboard division – again Hamilton came in second, with Brady, Blanchard, and Kristen and Erika Steiner rounding out the top six.
Kayla Zimmerman took the top honors for girls 13-under bodyboarding. Vanessa Martinez, Tiare Marr Foster, Renee Steiner and Mallory Mossa followed.
In the 14-17 division, Mku Uemura won the short-board division, with Ashley Fagerstedt placing second, Mele White in third, Lyra Drouin in fourth and lauren Taylor and Angela Patch notching fifth and sixth.
Janna Irons, who also took the Bodyboard competition, won the longboard over Uemura. Tommee Giltner, Lauren Taylor, Lyra Drouin, and Anuhea Nakahara rounded the longboard top six.
Glitner was edged by Irons to place second in the 14-17 bodyboarding division. Angela Patch, Nakahara and Sierra Mamiya followed.
In the 18-25 division, Teddy Lee Sipe ran away with gold in the shortboard competition. Crystal Dzigas, Arika Hultquist and Rose Walker rounded the top four for shortboard.
Brandy Filtzer won the longboard division. Dzigas, Maki Vernon, Crystal Bratvold, Lee Sipea and Cassie Soares made up the top six.
And in the 26 & Over division, Jenny Crusat took top honors in the short board, and Gayle Filtzer won the the Longboard.
Maureen Chung, Donna Asuncion, Julie Wassel, Filtzer and Bright Carreira rounded the shortboard top six, and Crusat, Chung, Wassel, Liz Gonzales and Lisa Hobbs rounded the top six in the longboard competition.
