Effective at the beginning of this month, new National Fire Safety Standards prohibit retailers from refilling any propane tanks not sporting overfill protection devices.
That means thousands of Kaua’i people who camp, hunt, fish, or grill with gas in the backyard or at the beach must now get new propane cylinders, because of the new federal regulations.
Some Kaua’i retailers are offering to dispose of the suddenly obsolete tanks, and are offering special sale prices on new tanks.
Cylinders from four pounds to 40 pounds, excluding forklift and welding and cutting gas cylinders, all require overfill prevention devices, or OPDs.
