A “SHALLOW WATER” sign, is the only consolation users of the Waika’ea Canal small boat ramp have for the buildup of sand over the past seven to eight years that has restricted the channel to where only smaller fishing boats are able to navigate the channel. The Waika’ea Canal boat ramp ‘ohana, which oversees the facility, said that about 10-12 boats use the landing on weekdays, with these numbers jumping to 25-30 boats on weekends.
Kaua’i DLNR Boating Division district manager Vaughan Tyndzik said they are in the process of preparing to dredge the channel, but are waiting for approval from the Army Corps of Engineers.
Tzyndik said a new navigational system including lights and improved signage is on order, and should be delivered in about a month.
He said the engineers are getting numbers on usage in planning for a possible septic system at the boat ramp. For now, people will have to use portable toilets until the boating division can put in a prefab restroom facility.
“It’s on the agenda and we have not forgotten,” Tyndzik said of the work at the Waika’ea Canal boat ramp.
