Star Wars fans began lining up at noon Wednesday for the midnight Kaua’i premiere of George Lucas’ latest film.
By 4 p.m. the line-up was headed up by Nick Morrison, Hunter Morrison and Tyler Inouye, of Kalaheo; Randall Koerte and Liana Degracia, from Wailua; and a Darth Vader look-a-like who said he was from Kapa’a.
The midnight showing of “Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones” at the Kukui Grove Cinemas was apparently rescheduled due to popular demand and was scheduled to screen at 12:05 a.m.
Nick Morrison said his son Hunter woke up at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday morning and called up the Kukui Grove Cinema’s recorded message, discovering that the special midnight showing had been added. Nick said he and his son immediately made plans to be first in line at the cinema in Lihu’e.
The 12-hour wait was nothing new for the Morrisons, who were also first in line at Kukui Grove Cinema on May 18, 1999 for the midnight showing of “Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.”
The Morrisons arrived at Kukui Grove Cinema around noon Wednesday, beating out Koerte, Degracia and Darth Vader by at least four hours.
“We just wanted to keep the tradition alive,” Nick Morrison said.
To pass the time they brought supplies: beach chairs, cold drinks, a portable CD player and Game Boys. The dad and son found a parking space adjacent to their head-of-the-line place for easy access to their supplies.
The theater had originally scheduled the movie to open at about 1 p.m. today.
