The first round of the Callaway Junior World Championships teed off Wednesday at the Hawaii Country Club, and many Kauaian golfers have made hearty first impressions.
Cyrus Ogata leads the 11/12 boys division by two strokes, shooting a 65 in the opening round. He is followed by Oahu’s Michael Sato (67) and the Big Island’s Max Bonk (67).
Kauai’s T.J. Kua is hovering around seventh with a 72. Other Kauaians in the division: Travis Toguchi shot a 75; Grant Paiste is right behind Toguchi with a 76; Taylor Bell had 78; Byron Rualizo and Cory Oride each shot 80; Micah Yoshioka notched an 85.
In 11/12 girls, only Makana Sakihama is entered from Kauai. She shot an 86 and is currently in the sixth position.
Kelli Oride made a good first impression in the girls 7/8 age division. She is currently in second place after she shot a 74 in the first round.
Justin Uegawa shot an 89 in the boys 7/8 division.
In girls 9/10, Rae-lyn Morikawa notched an opening day score of 77, good enough for fifth place on the leaderboard.
And in boys 9/10, Shea Shimabukuro is in seventh place with a 71 first round and Wiley Yoshioka is not far behind with a 75.
